Ignition Repair Birmingham
A worn ignition barrel makes the key stick, turn loosely or fail to start the car. We repair or replace the ignition lock and match the keys to it. Many vehicles also need the immobiliser data re-learned.
When you need this
- Key sticks or will not turn
- Car starts only with wiggling
- Steering lock stuck
How it works
- Call or WhatsApp with your reg and a photo of the car (and the key, if you have one).

- We arrive, cut and program the key on site, then test it in the door, ignition and remote.
- Pay once every function works.
In detail
Ignition barrels wear from years of use: the tiny plates inside, called wafers, wear down until the key sticks, turns without engaging, or spins freely. We repair the barrel by replacing the worn wafers where possible; otherwise we fit a new ignition lock. A new barrel can be re-keyed to your existing key on many models, so one key still does everything. What affects the job is the vehicle: many need the immobiliser — the security system that recognises your key — re-learned before the car will start.
Questions about ignition repair & ignition lock replacement
My key won't turn in the ignition — what's wrong?
Usually a worn ignition barrel. The internal wafers wear down over time until they no longer line up with your key. It can also be a steering lock that hasn't released — try gently rocking the steering wheel while turning the key. If that doesn't work, the barrel needs repair or replacement.
The key turns but the car won't start — is it the ignition?
Not necessarily. If the key turns freely with no resistance, the barrel may have failed internally. But if the engine cranks and won't fire, or nothing happens at all, the fault could be the immobiliser, battery or starter instead. We diagnose the real cause before replacing anything.
Can you repair an ignition barrel or does it need replacing?
We repair it where we can. Replacing the worn wafers inside the barrel is often enough and keeps your existing key. If the barrel housing itself is damaged or too worn, we fit a new ignition lock — and on many models we re-key it so your original key still works.
My steering lock is stuck — can you fix it?
Often, yes. A stuck steering lock is usually linked to a worn ignition barrel rather than a separate fault. We free it without forcing — forcing can snap the key or damage the column — then repair the barrel so it doesn't happen again.
How much does ignition repair cost?
Prices vary by vehicle — a wafer repair costs less than a full lock replacement, and some models need immobiliser re-learning afterwards. Call or WhatsApp with your reg and a description of the symptoms for a fixed quote before we travel.
Do you repair ignitions at my home?
Yes — most ignition work is done at your location, whether that's home, work or roadside. Some barrels need the car in a specific state to remove, so tell us the symptoms when you call and we'll confirm the job can be done on site.
