Starter Motor & Alternator Birmingham
A clicking start or no crank points to the battery or starter. A battery light or dimming lights points to the alternator. We load-test the battery, starter and charging system so you only replace what has failed.
When you need this
- Clicking or slow crank
- Battery light on while driving
- Car dies after jump start
How it works
- Describe what happens and when.
- We test battery, charging, wiring and modules.
- We repair or replace only what is proven faulty.
- Everything is tested again before we leave.
In detail
We begin with a load test on the battery — a battery can show 12 volts and still collapse under load. Then we test the starter circuit for voltage drop across the cables and earth straps, which is a common hidden cause of slow cranking. For charging faults we check alternator output under electrical load, plus the drive belt and connections. Starters buried deep in the engine bay can need workshop access; we tell you upfront if yours is one of them.
Questions about starter motor & alternator
My car just clicks and won’t start — what is it?
Usually the battery or the starter motor. Rapid clicking is typically a flat battery; a single loud click often means the starter solenoid is engaging but the motor itself has failed. We test both on site so you replace the right part, not both.
What does the battery light on the dashboard mean?
It means the charging system is not working — the alternator (the part that recharges your battery while the engine runs) has stopped charging, or the drive belt driving it has snapped. The car is running on battery power alone and will stop when that runs out, so don’t delay getting it checked.
My headlights dim when I slow down — is that the alternator?
Very likely. Dimming lights, especially at idle, point to an alternator that can no longer keep up with demand. We test its output under load — headlights, heater and heated screen on — to confirm before anything is replaced.
The car died right after a jump start — why?
Because the alternator is not recharging the battery. A jump start borrows power; if the charging system is dead, the car runs the battery flat again within minutes. We test the alternator and battery together to find which one failed.
Can you replace a starter motor at my home?
Often, yes. Many starters are accessible enough to replace on your drive or at work. Some are buried behind other components and genuinely need a ramp. We check your model’s layout when you call and tell you honestly which it is before we set off.
How much for a new starter motor or alternator?
It varies by vehicle, so we never guess. Send your reg and symptoms and we give you a fixed quote before we travel — parts and labour included. The price is confirmed before work starts.
