Car Key Repair Birmingham
Many keys can be repaired instead of replaced: worn buttons, cracked shells, broken blades and dead remotes. Repair is usually cheaper than a new key. We test the key before and after so you know what was wrong.
When you need this
- Buttons stopped working
- Case cracked or blade snapped
- Remote works only sometimes
How it works
- Call or WhatsApp with your reg and a photo of the car (and the key, if you have one).
- Get a fixed quote before we travel.
- We arrive, cut and program the key on site, then test it in the door, ignition and remote.
- Pay once every function works.
In detail
Most key damage is mechanical, not electronic: worn-through buttons, a cracked shell, a failed flip mechanism or a snapped blade. We open the key, test the circuit board and battery, then rebuild it with a new shell, buttons or blade around your original electronics — which is why it usually costs less than a new key. Water damage or a cracked board can put a key beyond repair, and if the transponder chip itself has failed it must be replaced and programmed to the car.
Questions about car key repair
My key fob is not working — can it be repaired?
Often, yes. A dead fob is usually a flat battery, worn buttons or a cracked solder joint — not a dead key. We open it up, test the board and battery, and repair or replace what's failed. If the electronics are fine, a new shell and buttons bring it back to life.
The buttons on my car key have worn through — what can you do?
We fit new rubber buttons or a complete new shell around your original electronics. It's one of the most common repairs we do and it leaves the key working like new. We test every button before we leave.
Can you replace a car key battery?
Yes — and it's worth trying before assuming the key is dead. A weak battery causes short range and intermittent locking. We fit the correct battery, test the remote, and check the old battery wasn't masking a deeper fault.
My key got wet — is it ruined?
Not always, but water damage is the hardest repair. We dry the board, clean any corrosion and test it — sometimes that's enough. If the board is badly corroded the key may be beyond repair, and we'll tell you honestly rather than charge for a fix that won't last.
Is it cheaper to repair my key or get a new one?
Repair is usually cheaper, because we reuse your original electronics and only replace the broken parts. If the transponder chip or board has failed, a new key can work out better — we'll test first and give you a fixed quote for both options before any work starts.
Will my repaired key need programming again?
Only if the transponder chip — the tiny chip your car's immobiliser recognises — is replaced. Shell, button, blade and battery repairs don't touch the programming, so the key works exactly as before. We test the key in the door and ignition after every repair.
