Engine Diagnostics Birmingham

For misfires, rough running, no-start and poor power we test sensors, injectors, ignition, boost and the ECU itself. Targeted diagnosis saves you replacing parts that were never faulty.

When you need this

  • Misfire or rough idle
  • Loss of power
  • Engine management light

How it works

  1. Tell us the warning lights and symptoms.
  2. We connect a professional scan tool and read all modules.
  3. We check live data to confirm the cause, not just the code.
  4. You get a plain-English report and a repair quote.

In detail

An engine fault code only names the system, so we go further: compression and fuel pressure tests, injector balance checks, ignition scope patterns, and boost and vacuum readings on turbo engines. The ECU (engine control unit, the car's engine computer) and its wiring get tested before we condemn any part. Limp mode — the car's self-protection that cuts power — is traced to its trigger, whether a sensor, the turbo, or the DPF. Some faults are found in minutes; wiring gremlins take longer. We tell you which yours is.

Questions about ecu & engine diagnostics

What does the engine management light mean?

It means the ECU — the engine control unit, your car's engine computer — has spotted something outside its normal readings. It could be a sensor, the ignition, fuelling, or the turbo. The light alone can't tell you which. We scan the codes, then test the suspect system to find the real fault.

My car has gone into limp mode. What should I do?

Limp mode is the car's self-protection: it cuts power to stop engine damage when something is seriously wrong. Ease off, avoid motorways if you can, and get it diagnosed soon — driving on in limp mode can turn a sensor fault into a bigger repair. We trace it to its trigger, whether that's a sensor, the turbo, or the DPF.

Why is my car misfiring?

A misfire means one cylinder isn't firing properly. The usual suspects are worn spark plugs, a failing coil pack, a clogged injector, or low compression. The fault code narrows it to a cylinder; we then test ignition, fuelling, and compression to prove which part has failed before anything is replaced.

How long does engine diagnostics take?

The initial scan and first checks usually take under an hour. If the fault is intermittent or buried in the wiring, confirming it takes longer — we won't guess. We'll tell you upfront whether yours looks straightforward or needs deeper testing, and you get a fixed quote before we travel.

Will clearing the code fix the misfire?

No — and with a misfire, waiting makes it worse. Unburnt fuel from a misfiring cylinder can overheat and destroy the catalytic converter, turning a small ignition fault into a much bigger repair. Get the cause found and fixed; we only clear the code once the repair is tested.

Can you tell if the ECU itself is faulty?

Yes. We test the ECU and its wiring and power supplies before condemning it — many 'ECU faults' turn out to be broken wiring or a bad earth. If the ECU has genuinely failed, repair or replacement with coding is possible on many models. We'll tell you honestly which yours needs.
